DW Larrabee

My passion to make art has been with me all my life. When I've allowed it to, it has led me to the freedom that comes with the simplification of perception and has provided me with an extraordinary sense of peace.

I was born on a farm in Peterborough, New Hampshire in 1953, lived in the Pacific Northwest and England for several years before settling in California in 1978.

I've never had any formal art education. My great aunt, Mattie Larrabee Whittemore (a landscape painter from the 1920's through 1970's) taught me the basics (perspective, vanishing points, shading, squinting) when I was a child. I am also descended from George Catlin whose paintings from the mid-1800's are housed at the Smithsonian Institute.

I've worked in various media over the years; oil on canvas, digital collage, monotypes. The smaller monotypes evolved out of practicality (my studio in Santa Monica was full by the mid-90's, but I still needed to work). I consider each individual greeting card and 8x10 (numbered chronologically) to be a part of a larger piece of artwork which will continue to grow as long as I do.

All of my artistic expression feeds my needs, but it is the pen&ink work that has always been the most satisfying. Once a piece is "blocked out" I am able to spend hours at the drawing table discovering my Self in relation to the rest of the Universe.
